About Freemasonry

Freemasonry- taking good men and making them better

What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is a fraternal organization that traces its origins back to the medieval stonemasons who were responsible for the construction of some of Europe's most impressive buildings, but over time, the organization has evolved into a charitable organization that is dedicated to promoting fellowship, personal growth, and community.

Who can join?

Freemasonry welcomes men of all races, religions and from all walks of life who share its commitment to brotherhood, charity, and morality. It is built on a system of symbols and rituals that are designed to impart moral and ethical lessons to its members. These symbols and rituals draw heavily on the language and tools of the stonemasons of the Middle Ages, but are adapted to contemporary settings.

A commonly quoted statement is:

A peculiar system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols.

What does this mean?

Let's break it down into modern terms.

A peculiar system of morality..

Every member in Freemasonry must comply to the strict adherence of the Laws of the country in which they live, but more than that, they should try to be the best a person can be by affording help and assistance to others in times of distress. Never to slander others, or cause the harm.

Veiled in allegory...

It basically means that we have certain things we wish not to be disclosed to non Freemasons to make our Fraternity interesting. Allegory means to use a story, poem or Picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning.

Illustrated by symbols....

You have all seen the square and compass design on masonic artefacts. These are just two of the many symbols we use for reminding us of our high level of moral standards.
